Bundesliga MD12 – Schalke pass up diminished Dortmund on their way to second place

The past two months have been a whirlwind of woe for BVB – a story we’ve all heard much about. It’s now fair to say they’ve been nearly as good for S04 as they were bad for Dortmund as the Royal Blues slide past the Schwarzgelben on the Bundesliga table.

Matt and Abel talk through the divergent fortunes of those two grand Fussball clubs, as well as explore the weirdness on show in Borussia Mönchengladbach’s 4-2 win in Berlin. Bayern’s win over Augsburg (a game that’s the subject of Abel’s latest ‘Anatomy of a Goal’ on Patreon this week) gets a mention – in fact, they have at least a little to say about the whole match day. Huzzah!

World Cup 2018 Qualifiers – Bundesliga stars in action at the business end

Usually when they take away our Bundesliga for the week, we kick and scream – this week, it wasn’t so bad. International action served up plenty of drama as qualifying for World Cup 2018 came to a close. Matt and Abel talk over many of the best storylines, including Germany’s record-setting run to Russia, Turkey’s blackout at home to Iceland, and the exploits of a certain BVB wonder boy in Orlando.

The episode is rounded out with some Jupp-Heynckes-to-Bayern talk as well as discussion of a couple of topics put forward by our Patreon subscribers – how Bundesliga sides’ foreign tours are viewed back home, and who would join Bayern and Dortmund in a European Super League (should one ever get off the ground). Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Wolfsburg’s engine fails in Hamburg, Aubameyang takes the cannon on MD34

The Bundesliga crossed the finish line this past weekend with plenty of thrills. Dortmund’s top marksman helped them out-duel Hoffenheim  for third place; Cologne’s late kick earned them a Europa League group stage place at Hertha’s expense; HSV eventually found the legs to avoid finishing 16th and condemn the Wolves to a potentially tense Lower Saxony derby.

Matt Hermann and Abel Meszaros take most of this on board in virtual space; what they don’t discuss gets worked over by Matt, Terry Duffelen and Nik Wildhagen in a special live-in-Berlin segment. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Talking Fussball – “Disintegration” by Thomas Tuchel & The BVB

We’d all heard the rumors. Aki Watzke and Thomas Tuchel don’t like each other much. Some players have bristled at the young coach’s public dressing-downs. Turns out they were all true, and Dortmund and TT look headed for splitsville.

Nik Wildhagen picked up the vacationing Matt Hermann’s slack this week, hosting the pod and prodding Abel Meszaros for his take on the bad blood at BVB as well as the rest of the goings on on the antepenultimate Bundesliga match day of 2016-17. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Talking Fussball – Hoffenheim and Nagelsmann edge towards history, relegation battle takes another twist

In a season rife with inconsistency, two surprise packages have taken the Bundesliga by storm with their dynamic attacking football and, while Leipzig have already clinched a top-four finish, Hoffenheim aren’t likely to be too far behind them!

With just five games left in the 2016/17 campaign there is still plenty to be decided in Germany’s top flight. On Matchday 29 all the teams vying for European qualification had a weekend to forget, while the sides battling the drop – with the exception of Ingolstadt and Hamburg – all picked up potentially pivotal points in their respective bids for survival.

But which teams have the best chances of reaching their targets at either end of the table? James, Bent and Alex muse over that question and much more on the latest episode of Talking Fussball! Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Talking Fussball – Bayern crush BVB in der Klassiker ahead of key week in Europe, Ingolstadt claw toward safety

Remember November, when Dortmund bested Bayern, kicking off what we thought might be a real title race this season? Yeah, us neither, at least after watching the Bavarians steamroll BVB on Saturday night. Germany’s two giants will have to move on from the result right away, however – both are in Champions League quarterfinals this week.

Matt and returning podcaster Nik Wildhagen offer their takes on the duopoly’s doings this week, as well as what’s been powering Bremen’s surge. They also turn their attention to the unreal octopus-esque escape act under way at FC Ingolstadt. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Talking Fussball – Hoffenheim humble Bayern, Bremen stay white-hot on MD27

It’s not every week we can talk about FC Bayern München getting outplayed in the Bundesliga. In fact it’s almost no weeks at all, but as the Rekordmeister get ready for der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund, they kinda lost the plot against Hoffenheim.

Matt and long lost podcaster Alex Chaffer get stuck into that storyline, as well as the one about Werder Bremen being born again as a good soccer team on the pod. We also give out some listener-question-inspired alternative coaching awards, culminating in a vision of Christian Streich belting out this little number in the wee small hours. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

And while we know it’s already been a double-dose week here on TF, a little reminder that there’s even more to listen to. The Total Soccer Show, for out money the most entertaining football podcast in the US, had Matt on to talk about the Bundesliga, and it was very good fun. Have a listen and then subscribe!

Talking Fussball – Köln and Bremen the big winners on goal-shy MD25

Two rousing home wins of 4-2 and 3-0…and a bunch of “knife-edge” 1-0, 1-1, and 0-0 encounters. We can’t account for the league’s blunt blades up front this weekend – all we can do is provide the most entertainment we can here in Podville.

This week Matt Hermann and Abel Meszaros chronicle the decline and fall of RB Leipzig, the confounding brilliance of FFF pariah Anthony Modeste, the latest stride in Bayern’s march to the title, and much much more.

A fine way to head into the international break. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Talking Fussball – Bayern bash Bulls as Bundesliga Breaks for Winter

So that match we’d all been waiting for ever since it was clear that RB Leipzig were for real…was a bit of a disappointment. FC Bayern München were imperious in their slap-down and now enjoy a 3-point lead at the top heading into the winter break.

On this week’s show, Matt Hermann calls up Sal Mitha to get his thoughts on the atmosphere inside the Allianz for the big game that wasn’t, and sits down with his chums Nik Wildhagen and Abel Meszaros. The boys discuss the recent coaching comings and goings as well as give out mid-term report cards to all the Bundesliga sides.

Hope you enjoy – Aidan Rantoul, as always, has made it sound great.

Talking Fussball – HSV and the Wolves press eject, Bayern’s fab five sends them back to the top

In the life of every football club, there comes a time to take stock. When the short-term trend is not going your way, it might be best to do nothing at all. Medium-trend slides can call for a change at the coaching level. Long-term? That means The Man Upstairs might have to go. This week it was a trip to the exit door for sporting directors Klaus Allofs of VfL Wolfsburg and HSV’s Dietmar Beiersdorfer.

On this episode, Matt Hermann and Terry Duffelen take apart those moves, look at the five remaining Bundesliga sides in Europe’s knock-out stage draws, and run through the best of the action on MD14.

And after a drum roll…(helpfully provided by our producer Aidan Rantoul)…we announce the winners of our Bayern: Creating a Global Superclub book give-away contest!
