Talking Fussball – Hertha, Eintracht rise as it’s BVB’s turn to stumble

‘Full to bursting’ is how you could describe this one. MD12 left us wanting to dig in to 3rd- and 4th-placed Hertha BSC and Eintracht Frankfurt’s continued strong seasons, especially after the latter knocked off mighty BVB on the weekend. We also discuss the slumping Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach, hoping to diagnose what’s keeping them under the weather. (In Leverkusen’s most recent case – the hand of Javi/God…) We also get another instalment of TF Pet Team Search, as well as an update from the People’s Republic of St. Pauli with a Millernton Kompakt. If that didn’t sound like enough already, Nik Wildhagen gets out the passenger side door, rounds the car and gets into the driver’s seat. Matt Hermann does the vice-versa version. A zesty little twist! Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

P.s. The winners of the new Uli Hesse will shortly be drawn and will be announced on next week’s show!

A wee teaser…of Uli Hesse (Bayern book giveaway next week)

So ahead of the big game some folks like to Der Klassiker, Matt called up Uli Hesse, who you may know as the author of the essential book Tor! The Story of German Football or as a columnist at ESPNFC. In addition to being a pretty much delightful guy, Uli has an interesting relationship to this fixture. He’s a Dortmund native (and BVB fan) who has recently written a new book on the other team called Bayern: Creating a Global Superclub. Here’s a little taste of the full interview to come in the next episode of Talking Fussball…as well as fair warning that we’ll be giving away no fewer than SIX copies of the book in a contest we’ll announce next week. Don’t miss out!

Talking Fussball – ¡TITLE RACE ALERT! as the Hoff hold Bayern and the Bulls gore Mainz (MD10 review)

We encourage Bundesliga fans beleaguered by the “one-team-league” critique to wave the current table in the naysayers’ faces after match day 10. Bayern met their match when Hoffenheim visited the Allianz Arena, while raging RB Leipzig’s headlong charge to the top landed the latest matador (one dressed in a goof-ball karneval outfit) in the ICU. Matt Hermann corrals Nik Wildhagen into a conversation over what this all means: what teams have a chance to press Bayern all season, which teams are not quite there, which teams are as good as gone…and much much more. Producer Aidan is there to get it all down in crystal clear audio. Enjoy!

Talking Fussball – Dark horses on the gallop: Growlin’ Ro-grr Schmidt among the trampled (MD8 Review)

Match day eight in the Bundesliga brought more wins for most of the ‘surprise’ top teams in this young season of change. RB Leipzig, Hertha BSC and Hoffenheim all kept pace with FC Bayern München by collecting three points. The odd man out was 1.FC Köln, and you get the feeling they’d have found a way to win if they hadn’t been playing Hertha themselves.

Among the teams to suffer defeat at the hands of one of that group was Leverkusen, whose coach Roger Schmidt was a bit too aggro in his dispute over a foul call with opposite number Julian Nagelsmann for the DFB’s taste. Schmidt is now set to miss two games with a touchline ban.

Matt and Terry discuss Schmidt’s ban, preview the upcoming DFB Pokal second round, and wrap up the storylines from MD8. Hope you enjoy it!

Talking Fussball – 2016/17 Match Day 6

Matt Hermann and Niklas Wildhagen are back to take a closer look at match day 6 in the Bundesliga.

The two of them discuss the latest news and all the match day 6 action that catches their fancy. Any truth to those rumours surrounding Ralf Rangnick taking over the English national team? What to make of Schalke’s big win against Gladbach? Where is 1. FC Köln going from here after a fabulous 1-1 draw away from home against Bayern? Find out on an all new Talking Fussball!

Talking Fussball – MD2 Review and Syria’s number one Werder Bremen fan

Talking Fussball is really pretty pleased with the result it got this week while wrapping up Bundesliga match day 2.

Matt Hermann brought podcast all-star Terry Duffelen back into the line-up and handed a debut to New Jersey’s Abel Meszaros. The man known as @BundesPL on Twitter played a blinder, even as he had to come off during the second half water break. Nik Wildhagen then made a huge impact in a cameo appearance interviewing the man behind Werder Bremen’s fan club in war-struck Syria, Akel Alkubeh (@Akel_SVW).

Enjoy, and see you next week!

Talking Fussball – Bundesliga MD1 Review

The Bundesliga got under way and Talking Fussball just had to react – by recording a podcast. Matt Hermann, Nik Wildhagen and Alex Chaffer take in all the goalmouth action (Bobby Wood! Julian Schieber!) plus chew the fat over the deals getting done in the waning days of the transfer window (Oliver Burke! Serge Gnabry!).

We also introduce the first of our candidates for Talking Fussball’s pet team, a lower league side so cutie-wutie-patootie that Nik just had to scratch behind its ears and dig in to its history for a few minutes. Get in there.

Talking Fussball – Bundesliga 2016-17 Season Preview

Talking Fussball is back after a long and restful Summer away – Matt Hermann mans the controls with Alex Chaffer and Nik Wildhagen close at hand.

The boys hurtle straight into the matter at hand: discussing all the German football news that’s fit to pod, including a full Bundesliga season preview, a look at match day one, and our crack prognostications on who will be doing the Bierdusche, who will claim the European places, and who will going down to the 2. Bundesliga. We even have a brief guest spot from the Millernton FC St. Pauli podcast for you. 71 minutes of Bundesliga heaven, we like to think.

Enjoy listening – we enjoyed making it!

Talking Fussball Extra – Atletico beat Bayern, who’ll buy Hummels / 1.FC Nürnberg focus / MD32 Preview

FC Bayern München’s road toward the UEFA Champions League Final (we hope) has hit another speed bump away from home. Atletico Madrid took them down 1-0 at the Vicente Calderon and now there’s all to do in Munich next week. FC Bayern’s long-term types, meanwhile, have been busy turning the head of Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels. He’s put in a formal transfer request with BVB to let them know he hopes to return to his boyhood club. Matt Hermann and Terry Duffelen join up to mull over both of those topics, as well as set up Match Day 32 in the Bundesliga.

In the middle, Matt is joined by Florian Zenger, 1.FC Nürnberg blogger extraordinaire at Clubfans United and Faszination Nordkurve. He brings us up to speed on what’s been going on at Der Club during its two-year hiatus form the top flight and how good its chances are of returning through the relegation playoff.

Talking Fussball Extra – Bayern in UCL final four, MD30 Preview

Bayern Munich are in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League for the sixth time in the last seven seasons after taking care of Benfica. Wolfsburg are not, having blown their first-leg lead in short order and falling to Real Madrid. Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen are here to talk all that over, as well as to clue you in on a few of the choicer tidbits of Bundesliga news. Later on, the boys discuss what’s to come on Bundesliga match day 30, where a long slate of games featuring European hopefuls against relegation candidates is on offer.
