European Blues – Bayern lead the way as Bundesliga sides fail and fail and fail

Hoo boy. Six teams in Europe, six losers. Bayern drop Carlo Ancelotti like he’s a bag of bologna sandwiches left outside on a hot day. Plenty of bad news to go around, and to tell the truth we didn’t know the half of it at recording time!

Matt Hermann caught up with his Berlin-based chum Stephan Uersfeld (ESPNFC) for some Bundesliga soul-searching just about an hour before the axe fell on Carlo’s neck, and before the Europa League trio wet-farted their way to a perfect storm of awful for the Federal League. Still, the whole convo is relevant, as the league’s present doldrums come in for unpacking.

Along the way, Jack Grimse of beIN Sports joins Matt on the line from Miami for a bit of extra insight into Real Madrid’s mastery. (Pardon the sound quality on Matt’s end – we had to use the backup recording as the Plan A version failed, hard.) Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

NOTE: For you sticklers for the highest standards of timeliness, we’ve got a Carlo post-mortem from Abel Maeszaros on our Patreon page…and it’s free!

Bundesliga History Teaser – MSV Duisburg’s 70s heyday with Uli Hesse

Our new episode isn’t here yet, but here’a a nugget to tide you over – our own Nik Wildhagen and Uli Hesse (ESPNFC, 11Freunde) digging into a fun corner of Bundesliga history!

The chat is a teaser for an ace new series Nik is starting over on our Patreon page in which he turns the spotlight on some of the most fascinating corners of the Federal League’s more than half a century of history. This one’s about MSV Duisburg and their giant-killing exploits in the 1970s. This is just a short snippet – for more, we invite you to become a subscriber. For a little as $3 a month, you can get all kinds of access!

Bundesliga MD3 – Bayern IN CRISIS after falling to the Hoff, Cologne smelling sour

Where else could we start this week? Bayern LOSE a game and it’s only MD3! Hoffenheim were a bit too crafty for the defending champs on Saturday night, Robert Lewandowski spoke candidly to Spiegel about his concerns for the club’s future, and all hell breaks loose.

Matt and Abel are all over that hell from minute one, moving on to Bibiana Steinhaus’ historic Sunday in Berlin, Cologne’s continued funk, and Domenico Tedesco’s thus-far-winning gamble on youth auf Schalke. Rounded out by a glance at the European engagements to come. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

International Break – Germany Edge Closer and Your Questions Answered

No Bundesliga this past weekend – ugh. But just when you get that feeling that you’re walking through the wilderness, who should appear but a familiar and trusted guide…it’s James Thorogood! He and Bent Muehue convene in Cologne to talk Die Mannschaft, who are nearly home and dry after two wins in World Cup Qualifying this week.

The show is rounded out by discussions suggested by our Patreon subscribers, who came through for us with some provocative topics. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Bundesliga MD2 – Hamburg and Hanover Spark Northern Renaissance

Sometimes it takes a season for predictions to come back and bite you; other times it’s just a matter of weeks. The supposedly lowly Hamburger SV and Hannover 96 are both off to a flying start, making Talking Fussball scratch its collective head.

This week Matt is joined by Abel and Terry for a Bundesliga roundtable, covering the doings on MD2 as well as transfer news, like BVB’s turning Ousmane Dembele into Andriy Yarmolenko and at least 75 million euros. We’ve also got European Football Expert Andy Brassell’s bulletproof analysis of the German teams’ draws in the Europa League. (If you want to hear his thoughts on the Champions League, and trust us, you do – sign up as a subscriber on Patreon.) Produced by Aidan Rantoul. Enjoy!

Bundesliga MD1 – Dortmund and Schalke shine, Leckie is unleashed

The starting gun has been fired on another season in the Bundesliga, and some teams looked more ready on their marks than others. Dortmund looked great, riding Mario Götze and Christian Pulisic’s midfield mastery to a big win in Wolfsburg; Schalke’s canny countering game was too much for last year’s bridesmaids RBL; Mathew Leckie made his presence felt in Berlin as he broke his dry spell in a BIG way with a brace against Stuttgart.

You’ll hear about all this and more this week as Matt and Abel run through MD1 as well as bring you up to date on Bundesliga news, and a Patreon campaign that’s well worth getting behind. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

2017-18 Bundesliga Preview – Picks to Remember and Patreon!

We’re so damn close now – the Bundesliga kicks off on Friday and Talking Fussball is ready to lay it on the line and tell you how we think the league will shake out. Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen are on duty this week – they hit up some of the bigger goings on in the DFB Pokal as well as give their thoughts on the Dembele Affair as well. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

As a treat, we have a taste of Ian Joy of FOX Sports on to share his thoughts on the new season, as well as how the German game is developing in the US market. 2017-18 Bundesliga Preview – Players with plenty to prove

We’re one week closer to the start of the Bundesliga season! Bayern got the better of Dortmund in the DFL Supercup thanks to superstar goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, but lost front office guru Michael Reschke to Stuttgart that same wekeend.

Talking Fussball gets into the personnel evaluation spirit themselves this week, as Matt and Abel run through some of the players who may have the biggest impact on the coming season. What does James have to offer Bayern? Can Jhon Cordoba fill Anthony Modeste’s boots? Will Sebastien Haller be good enough to hold a candle to the Fussballgott in Frankfurt? It’s all there. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Bundesliga / NBA extravaganza!

With Bundesliga teams still kicking around in friendlies of questionable consequence, Talking Fussball makes its return in full goofball mode. After chewing over Bayern’s appointment of a new Sporting Director and the potential dawn of a new big-spending era for Hannover 96, Matt and Abel get down to business. And by ‘business’ they mean solving the ancient riddle of: Which teams from the National Basketball Association should be twinned with which Bundesliga teams?

Some are easy (Hamburger SV = NY Knicks), some tricky (are Bayern the Warriors, for their current dominance, or the Spurs, for their resilience?) If you’re an NBA fan looking to get into a Bundesliga club, or a German football fan sniffing around the Association for a team, look no further. And if you’re a fan of cross-sport comparisons or general tomfoolery, you’re in luck as well.

Season review – Tuchel turfed out after DFB Cup triumph, Brooks joins wolfpack, a look back at BVB’s 1997 UCL win

A dangerously large helping of Talking Fussball this week! Matt and Abel planned to convene to give out superlatives for the 2016-17 Bundesliga season…and somehow got sidetracked by the axe that fell on Thomas Tuchel at BVB, as well as John Brooks’ record-smashing move from Hertha to Wolfsburg. Strong takes on both of these moves, folks.

In the middle of all this, BVB London President Benjamin McFadyean stops by to reminisce about a little something that happened 20 years ago: a Champions League win for the Schwarzgelben. A feat for the ears produced by Aidan Rantoul.
