Talking Fussball zooms in on Germany’s premier knock-out competition, the DFB Pokal, this week. But was it really so magical if Bayern’s workmanlike win could be overshadowed by a surprise retirement announcement from Philipp Lahm? And didn’t Dortmund’s shootout win over Hertha seem like a whimper compared with the bang of their fans defending the 50+1 rule a little too zealously vs. RB Leipzig? (Sportfreunde Lotte’s continued success is a bit magical, we must admit.)
The Hinrunde in the Bundesliga is slowly coming to an end and soon there will be no Bundesliga football to keep us warm during the coldest time of the year. But, don’t worry – match day 17 is still to come!
In the first part of our show Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen mull over the results of the third round in the DFB Pokal.

Bayern’s treble dream is in tatters after BVB’s Jürgen Klopp finally won a showdown with Pep Guardiola in the German Cup semifinal. Dortmund will face Wolfsburg in the DFB Pokal Finale in Berlin after the Wolves tore down Arminia Bielefeld’s Cinderella story in the other semi.

Host Archie Rhind-Tutt and Bundesliga Fanatic senior editor Niklas Wildhagen talk about the season curtain raiser – the German Super Cup – and what it might mean for the season ahead. Borussia Dortmund picked up the trophy with a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich. The goal scorers for BVB were Henrikh Mkhitaryarn and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the latter who broke out a Spiderman mask in celebration. The game was a comfortable win for Borussia, but the game threw up more questions for Bayern due to a cruciate ligament injury to Javi Martinez. How will FCB react in defensive areas to this news?
The pair also talk transfers and more specifically about former Arsenal striker Niklas Bendtner who has recently arrived at Wolfsburg.

The DFB Pokal Final in Berlin (German Cup) pits two of the best teams in Europe -Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. The meet at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on Saturday evening for a game that has all the hallmarks of another classic. Dortmund are really hitting their stride, while Bayern will want the win the double just to consider this a successful season.
The massive match is the Relegation Play-Off. Hamburg have two games to overcome 2nd Division Greuther Fürth. It starts at the Imtech Arena on Thursday evening and concludes on Sunday afternoon. Is the Bundesliga Dinosaur about to become extinct?
One team that will be in the Bundesliga next season is Paderborn. They reached the promised land on the final day of the season. Peter Ahrens from Der Spiegel Online chats to Talking Fussball Extra about his home town club.
