It’s been a while – but like the Bundesliga, Talking Fussball is back with a bang! Matt Hermann sits down with Abel Meszaros to talk over the latest rumblings in the league, and calls in a few special guests for extra spice. Björn Enjebo of the Radio Råsunda podcast (strictly AIK) enters the fray to talk about Swedish phenom Alexander Isak, and Jonathan Stockitt comes along to fill us in on the Wolfpack’s winter moves. As is custom, the boys also discuss what went down on MD17, including goals and players of the week. They also go out on a limb and revise their picks for the top of the league and the teams they think are doomed. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.
So that match we’d all been waiting for ever since it was clear that RB Leipzig were for real…was a bit of a disappointment. FC Bayern München were imperious in their slap-down and now enjoy a 3-point lead at the top heading into the winter break.
On this week’s show, Matt Hermann calls up Sal Mitha to get his thoughts on the atmosphere inside the Allianz for the big game that wasn’t, and sits down with his chums Nik Wildhagen and Abel Meszaros. The boys discuss the recent coaching comings and goings as well as give out mid-term report cards to all the Bundesliga sides.
Hope you enjoy – Aidan Rantoul, as always, has made it sound great.
In the life of every football club, there comes a time to take stock. When the short-term trend is not going your way, it might be best to do nothing at all. Medium-trend slides can call for a change at the coaching level. Long-term? That means The Man Upstairs might have to go. This week it was a trip to the exit door for sporting directors Klaus Allofs of VfL Wolfsburg and HSV’s Dietmar Beiersdorfer.
On this episode, Matt Hermann and Terry Duffelen take apart those moves, look at the five remaining Bundesliga sides in Europe’s knock-out stage draws, and run through the best of the action on MD14.
And after a drum roll…(helpfully provided by our producer Aidan Rantoul)…we announce the winners of our Bayern: Creating a Global Superclub book give-away contest!
The opening phase of the Champions League is done. Dortmund won their group, Bayer and Bayern came second; only poor Gladbach couldn’t manage to move on – and they had the misfortune of being in the ‘Guardiola group’. Matt and Nik are joined by Abel Meszaros this week to talk all things Königsklasse, as well as look back at MD13 and ahead at MD14. In short, the Foals come in for a pounding, Marco Reus comes in for an ogling, and everybody else is somewhere in between. Expertly produced by Aidan Rantoul.
It’s come to this everybody. RB Leipzig are now certifiably the best team in the division: undefeated in 11 games, they’ve gone top after winning in Leverkusen. Bayern did their part, of course – they lost in Dortmund in ‘Der Klassiker‘ but there’s a silver lining for the lederhosen crowd: FCB are the subject of a new book from the irresistible Uli Hesse. It’s called Bayern: Creating a Global Superclub and it’s out now through Yellow Jersey Press. We have six copies to give away, and you can enter to win one below. Listen in for Matt Hermann‘s full interview with Hesse, and for plenty of MD11 chat with Nik Wildhagen, who isn’t taking all this Red Bull success lying down, no sir. We encourage Bundesliga fans beleaguered by the “one-team-league” critique to wave the current table in the naysayers’ faces after match day 10. Bayern met their match when Hoffenheim visited the Allianz Arena, while raging RB Leipzig’s headlong charge to the top landed the latest matador (one dressed in a goof-ball karneval outfit) in the ICU. Matt Hermann corrals Nik Wildhagen into a conversation over what this all means: what teams have a chance to press Bayern all season, which teams are not quite there, which teams are as good as gone…and much much more. Producer Aidan is there to get it all down in crystal clear audio. Enjoy!
Match day eight in the Bundesliga brought more wins for most of the ‘surprise’ top teams in this young season of change. RB Leipzig, Hertha BSC and Hoffenheim all kept pace with FC Bayern München by collecting three points. The odd man out was 1.FC Köln, and you get the feeling they’d have found a way to win if they hadn’t been playing Hertha themselves.
Among the teams to suffer defeat at the hands of one of that group was Leverkusen, whose coach Roger Schmidt was a bit too aggro in his dispute over a foul call with opposite number Julian Nagelsmann for the DFB’s taste. Schmidt is now set to miss two games with a touchline ban.
Matt and Terry discuss Schmidt’s ban, preview the upcoming DFB Pokal second round, and wrap up the storylines from MD8. Hope you enjoy it!
Matchday 5 in the Bundesliga was comeback central! The weekend results had widespread implications for several clubs as we not only saw standout performances and historically poor starts to the season, but also the second managerial casualty of 2016/17.
Accordingly James and Bent sat down to discuss and dissect all this Bundesliga. From FC Schalke 04 being in crisis mode to Hamburger SV’s chances of actually getting it right this time with Markus Gisdol.

The Bundesliga got under way and Talking Fussball just had to react – by recording a podcast. Matt Hermann, Nik Wildhagen and Alex Chaffer take in all the goalmouth action (Bobby Wood! Julian Schieber!) plus chew the fat over the deals getting done in the waning days of the transfer window (Oliver Burke! Serge Gnabry!).
We also introduce the first of our candidates for Talking Fussball’s pet team, a lower league side so cutie-wutie-patootie that Nik just had to scratch behind its ears and dig in to its history for a few minutes. Get in there.
Talking Fussball – The Bundesliga Show returns as James, Jon and Bent breakdown all things Matchday 34, as well as the bigger picture of the entire campaign. The guys also share their opinions on a host of end-of-season awards.
What have we made of the early summer transfer activity? Did SV Werder Bremen deserve to stay in the Bundesliga? What was Guido Winkmann thinking for BAyer 04 Leverkusen’s second goal against FC Ingolstadt 04? Should SV Darmstadt 98 sell Sandro Wagner and who was the Player of the Season?
