Bundesliga 2017-18 Season Review – Favre signs at BVB, Leipzig’s Rangnick considers hiring himself

Time to look back at the Bundesliga year that was in our 2017-18 Saisonrückblick! Matt and Abel fire up the pod machine to figure out who deserves to be young player of the year, minister of defense, most disappointing player, coach of the year and much more.

Before they dig in to the past, they bring you up to date on the big news of the week that was: Swiss artiste Lucien Favre’s return to the Federal League, Lukas Hradecky’s move to Bayer Leverkusen, and Lewis Holtby and HSV renewing their vows. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Bundesliga MD33 – Schalke seal ‘Vice-Champions’ status, Relegation fight goes down to wire

Mainz did themselves a solid on Match Day 33, busting loose for a 2-1 win at the Westfalenstadion over BVB. That meant not only that the zero-fivers are safe but also that Schalke are guaranteed to finish above Dortmund for the first time in nine years.

Matt and Abel talk all that over, as well as the fates of the remaining relegation candidates (HSV, Wolfsburg, Freiburg) and the unholy muddle that is the European qualification situation. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Bundesliga MD32 – Hoffenheim climb, Hamburg claw their way up in the final phase

It’s Julian Nagelsmann and the village club who look strongest as the 2017-18 Bundesliga season draws to a close – suddenly TSG are breathing down the necks of both Dortmund and Schalke. Meanwhile at the bottom, Cologne may have received their official top flight pink slip, but HSV are threatening to make another improbable escape.

Matt finds a comfortable park bench to discuss it all with Stephan Uersfeld of ESPN. Listen in as they figure out the next move for the wantaway Max Meyer, asess Bayern’s chances of getting past Real after a misadventure in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal, and listen to a snippet of Toto played by a passing boombox. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Bundesliga MD 29 – Bayern snatch a sixth straight title, Hamburg shock Schalke

This past weekend, the most surprising thing happened: Hamburger Sportverein took down the (recently) mighty FC Schalke 04. As if to tip the scales back into balance, the least surprising thing happened as well as FC Bayern München claimed the Bundesliga title for the sixth year in a row.

Matt and Abel are back to break Match Day 29 down, including Dortmund’s warm-up act for the big Revierderby next week, Hoffenheim’s missed opportunity in Frankfurt, and which relegation-threatened teams should be most apprehensive as they head into the final five. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Bundesliga MD28 – BVB the victim in Klassiker massacre at Bayern, Hoffenheim still climbing

If Peter Stöger was looking to dispel the myth that his Dortmund team was defensively sound, a six-nil stomping in Munich was an emphatic way to do it. The result propels Bayern into their Champions League date with Sevilla with wind in their sails, and leaves BVB vulnerable to being overtaken as they enter a tricky set of fixtures.

Matt and Abel get a jump on match day 28 analysis, chewing over all the Klassiker fallout, the steady rise of Hoffenheim and much much more. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Bundesliga MD 26 – Titz the cure for what ails Hamburg after Bayern battering, Michy saves BVB’s bacon again

It’s basically a done deal – Hamburg are going down. This week’s two-part reset-button smash on either side of a 6-0 hiding at the hands of Bayern proves the club knows it too. Listen in as Matt and Abel go deep on the team the elegantly named Christian Titz is taking over as interim coach. (The two could just as easily have talked about Cologne’s sense of impending doom – unfortunately, they hadn’t yet lost to Bremen when the pod recorded.)

Also plenty of talk on Dortmund’s Dusel in winning against Eintracht, the doldrums of the foals, Franck Ribery’s renaissance weekend, and much much more. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

TF Fantasy MD 24 preview – JT seeks to bounce back from a terrible horrible no good very bad match day, Flo (as usual) sitting pretty

James is looking for whatever edge he can find after a weekend to forget in BL Fantasy – in part down to circumstances beyond his control. Flo managed to cash in on Mainz(!) players last week and if you listen in to this one, he has some other wild cards up his sleeve to help you prepare for MD 24. Produced to Aidan Rantoul. Enjoy!

TF Fantasy – MD 20 breakdown

The #TFFantasy train rolls on into MD20, where James and Flo address the burning line-up issues facing Official Fantasy Bundesliga managers as they prepare their line-ups. Even non-fantasy-playing Bundesliga fans will get plenty of insight on probable line-ups; the boys’ info is as fresh as it gets.

Along the way you’ll get a snippet of Abel’s interview with Oliver Zesiger, Sports Interactive’s head researcher for Football Manager’s Swiss Super League database. Here he gives the low-down on new BVB signing Manuel Akanji – on Patreon there’s much more where that came from!
