Talking Fussball – Big boys (and sportfriends) rule in DFB Pokal last 16

CAUTION: Product contains elevated levels of cup magic.

Talking Fussball zooms in on Germany’s premier knock-out competition, the DFB Pokal, this week. But was it really so magical if Bayern’s workmanlike win could be overshadowed by a surprise retirement announcement from Philipp Lahm? And didn’t Dortmund’s shootout win over Hertha seem like a whimper compared with the bang of their fans defending the 50+1 rule a little too zealously vs. RB Leipzig? (Sportfreunde Lotte’s continued success is a bit magical, we must admit.)

Matt Hermann speaks with Oli Moody in the main convo, which also previews MD20; Nick McKenna-Klein drops in with a first-hand account of #BVBRBL; Aidan Rantoul regulates the sound.

Talking Fussball MD18 – Red Bulls the first to best Hoffenheim, transfer window nearly shut

RB Leipzig have now gone where no bull – and no man either – has gone before after dealing TSG 1899 Hoffenheim their first loss of the season. Bayern were just good enough in Bremen to hold their lead, however, so the loudest sounds heard near the top were of Hertha and Dortmund dropping points.
Matt Hermann and Kit Holden of the MailOnline and Tagesspiegel talk it all out, as well as go over the biggest transfer moves in the league as the window comes ever closer to closure. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Talking Fussball – Bayern bash Bulls as Bundesliga Breaks for Winter

So that match we’d all been waiting for ever since it was clear that RB Leipzig were for real…was a bit of a disappointment. FC Bayern München were imperious in their slap-down and now enjoy a 3-point lead at the top heading into the winter break.

On this week’s show, Matt Hermann calls up Sal Mitha to get his thoughts on the atmosphere inside the Allianz for the big game that wasn’t, and sits down with his chums Nik Wildhagen and Abel Meszaros. The boys discuss the recent coaching comings and goings as well as give out mid-term report cards to all the Bundesliga sides.

Hope you enjoy – Aidan Rantoul, as always, has made it sound great.

Talking Fussball – HSV and the Wolves press eject, Bayern’s fab five sends them back to the top

In the life of every football club, there comes a time to take stock. When the short-term trend is not going your way, it might be best to do nothing at all. Medium-trend slides can call for a change at the coaching level. Long-term? That means The Man Upstairs might have to go. This week it was a trip to the exit door for sporting directors Klaus Allofs of VfL Wolfsburg and HSV’s Dietmar Beiersdorfer.

On this episode, Matt Hermann and Terry Duffelen take apart those moves, look at the five remaining Bundesliga sides in Europe’s knock-out stage draws, and run through the best of the action on MD14.

And after a drum roll…(helpfully provided by our producer Aidan Rantoul)…we announce the winners of our Bayern: Creating a Global Superclub book give-away contest!

Talking Fussball – 3 out of 4 Ain’t Bad: Bundesliga Champions League Review

The opening phase of the Champions League is done. Dortmund won their group, Bayer and Bayern came second; only poor Gladbach couldn’t manage to move on – and they had the misfortune of being in the ‘Guardiola group’. Matt and Nik are joined by Abel Meszaros this week to talk all things Königsklasse, as well as look back at MD13 and ahead at MD14. In short, the Foals come in for a pounding, Marco Reus comes in for an ogling, and everybody else is somewhere in between. Expertly produced by Aidan Rantoul.

Talking Fussball – Hertha, Eintracht rise as it’s BVB’s turn to stumble

‘Full to bursting’ is how you could describe this one. MD12 left us wanting to dig in to 3rd- and 4th-placed Hertha BSC and Eintracht Frankfurt’s continued strong seasons, especially after the latter knocked off mighty BVB on the weekend. We also discuss the slumping Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach, hoping to diagnose what’s keeping them under the weather. (In Leverkusen’s most recent case – the hand of Javi/God…) We also get another instalment of TF Pet Team Search, as well as an update from the People’s Republic of St. Pauli with a Millernton Kompakt. If that didn’t sound like enough already, Nik Wildhagen gets out the passenger side door, rounds the car and gets into the driver’s seat. Matt Hermann does the vice-versa version. A zesty little twist! Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

P.s. The winners of the new Uli Hesse will shortly be drawn and will be announced on next week’s show!

Talking Fussball – Leipzig go top after Bayern botch Klassiker – Uli Hesse book contest

It’s come to this everybody. RB Leipzig are now certifiably the best team in the division: undefeated in 11 games, they’ve gone top after winning in Leverkusen. Bayern did their part, of course – they lost in Dortmund in ‘Der Klassiker‘ but there’s a silver lining for the lederhosen crowd: FCB are the subject of a new book from the irresistible Uli Hesse. It’s called Bayern: Creating a Global Superclub and it’s out now through Yellow Jersey Press. We have six copies to give away, and you can enter to win one below. Listen in for Matt Hermann‘s full interview with Hesse, and for plenty of MD11 chat with Nik Wildhagen, who isn’t taking all this Red Bull success lying down, no sir. Produced by Aidan Rantoul.

A wee teaser…of Uli Hesse (Bayern book giveaway next week)

So ahead of the big game some folks like to Der Klassiker, Matt called up Uli Hesse, who you may know as the author of the essential book Tor! The Story of German Football or as a columnist at ESPNFC. In addition to being a pretty much delightful guy, Uli has an interesting relationship to this fixture. He’s a Dortmund native (and BVB fan) who has recently written a new book on the other team called Bayern: Creating a Global Superclub. Here’s a little taste of the full interview to come in the next episode of Talking Fussball…as well as fair warning that we’ll be giving away no fewer than SIX copies of the book in a contest we’ll announce next week. Don’t miss out!

Talking Fussball – ¡TITLE RACE ALERT! as the Hoff hold Bayern and the Bulls gore Mainz (MD10 review)

We encourage Bundesliga fans beleaguered by the “one-team-league” critique to wave the current table in the naysayers’ faces after match day 10. Bayern met their match when Hoffenheim visited the Allianz Arena, while raging RB Leipzig’s headlong charge to the top landed the latest matador (one dressed in a goof-ball karneval outfit) in the ICU. Matt Hermann corrals Nik Wildhagen into a conversation over what this all means: what teams have a chance to press Bayern all season, which teams are not quite there, which teams are as good as gone…and much much more. Producer Aidan is there to get it all down in crystal clear audio. Enjoy!

Talking Fussball – Bayern with a Red Bull chaser, Halloween comes early in frightful Revierderby (MD9 review)

The ninth day of matches in the Bundesliga brought FC Bayern München another 3-1 win over FC Augsburg. Not to be outdone, title rivals(!) RB Leipzig, 1. FC Köln, and the Hoff reeled off wins of their own to keep things tight at the top. Just a touch down the table, Borussia Dortmund are still searching for their first league win since September after rivals FC Schalke 04 ground their way to a 0-0 draw at the Westfalenstdion.

Matt Hermann and Jack Grimse (Paste Soccer, Bundesliga Fanatic, SB Nation) take all that in, as well as mull over Jogi Löw’s extended contract and offer advice in Wolfsburg’s continuing search for a new coach. Have a listen – I’m fairly certain we’ve minted an official new pod hipster favorite in Kerem Demirbay!
