Talking Fussball Extra – DFB Pokal quarter finals/Matchday 28 preview

A knock-out of an episode! Matt Hermann and Alex Handcock run down the matches from the last eight in the German Cup: Bielefeld pull a shocker! Bayern squeak past Leverkusen on penalties! Dortmund come back against the Hoff! Wolfsburg win…as we pretty much thought they would!

In part two, the boys look ahead to Bundesliga match day 28, when the two Borussias go head to head; Paderborn, Hamburg and Stuttgart look to stave off relegation against tough opponents, and Hannover 96 seek their first win since December.

Talking Fussball Extra – Matchday 22 preview & Champions League re-start

Talking Fussball Extra’s cup runneth over this week, as Matt Hermann and Terry Duffelen 1) take on FC Bayern München and FC Schalke 04’s opening legs of the UEFA Champions League knock-out stage, 2) welcome two guests to talk about the same, and 3) preview the 22nd match day of the 2014-15 Bundesliga season. Matt talks to Yan Matusevich (@YMatusik) about how Shakhtar Donetsk ended up playing its home matches 1,200 km away in Lviv, and checks in with the Spanish Football Podcast’s Phil Kitromilides (@PhilKitro) to hear about the two Madrid clubs’ dates with Bundesliga destiny. Enjoy!

Talking Fussball Extra – The Bundesliga Returns from the Winterpause

After a long winter break, Fussball is back and we are ready to talk all over it. This week Matt Hermann is joined by Archie Rhind-Tutt and guest panellist Kevin Hatchard (Talksport, TuneIn) for a bumper episode brought to you in partnership with fubo.tv, the streaming service that brings the Bundesliga right to your tablet, laptop or smartphone. Listeners with a North American IP address can sign up to win a free pass to see live Bundesliga broadcasts through to the end of the season here!

In this episode, we run down the best and worst of the winter transfer window, we preview match day 18, and we reflect on the biggest story of the break – the death of Wolfsburg’s Junior Malanda. Matt speaks to sports psychologist David Yeoman (who counselled the Hibernian FC team after the death of a player there in 2013) about the way teams can process grief.

Finally, we also have a listener survey we’d love you to take part in. Fill it out here – it’ll only take a few moments.

Talking Fussball – 2014 FIFA World Cup Round of 16

So…Germany was not exactly souverän in their round of 16 match against Algeria, but the 2-1 win still counts, and it sets up a quarterfinal meeting with France that has already set our mouths to watering. (Next course – snails!) In that spirit, Matt Hermann, Alex Handcock, and Jonathan Harding convened – and had a dynamite discussion. They dissected Joachim Löw’s persistence with a few unusual tactical ideas, got to the bottom of Per Mertesacker’s rage at the press after the Algeria match and even invited France 24’s Dan Levy (@DanLevy1) by to fill us in on the bleu side of the equation. As you’ll hear, there were a few technical issues in post-production, mostly relating to Jon’s audio. We did what we could, but his parts are kinda jacked, we have to admit. As he told us…he was trying to go “extra sultry.”

Talking Fussball – 2014 FIFA World Cup MD3

Germany have rounded out their Group G campaign in resounding fashion – and now so too have the boys at Talking Fussball. Matt Hermann and Niklas Wildhagen got together to recount how Germany got past the USMNT, as well as to mull over what steps they might want to take to trap the desert foxes of Algeria in round two.

Joining the pod this time out are two superb expert guests: John Godfrey (@ThisIsASN), founder and Editor in Chief of AmericanSoccerNow.com who’s been following the USMNT in Brazil, joined us by phone from the US camp in Sao Paulo to tell us what the 1-0 win for Germany was like in person; later, Maher Mezahi (@MezahiMaher), who writes on Algerian and North African football for ESPNFC and the Telegraph, let us know more about the desert foxes and what kind of threat they pose to Joachim Löw’s German national team.
