Talking Fussball Extra – Wolfsburg stun Real + MD29 Preview

Don’t even try and tell us you had an actual iota of an inkling that Wolfsburg had a chance to beat Real Madrid, as well as keep the Spaniards from scoring an away goal. Just don’t. That’s pretty much the standpoint from which we begin this week’s Talking Fussball Extra. One of wonder.

After reflecting on the miracle of Wolfsburg, we move on to discuss Bayern’s tight encounter with Benfica, Team Marktwert’s attempts to get their hands on more cash, Hertha Berlin’s attempt to think about maybe building a proper football stadium, and 1. FC Köln Sporting Director Jörg Schmadtke’s chewing gum issues. A full preview of Bundesliga Match Day 29 follows.

[And if you think you hear a wee crackle begin to seep into Matt’s track at some point, you’re not hearing things. Ain’t no fixing it in post, unfortunately.]

Talking Fussball Extra – SC Freiburg update + MD26 Preview

Talking Fussball Extra is back…loud and clear everybody! Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen cover all the German football news that’s fit to pod, and run through what’s to come on Match Day 26.

And hey remember SC Freiburg? The plucky southwesterners led by a wild-eyed cyclist who nearly made the Champions League and then went tumbling out of the league? Well, they still play soccer on a professional basis in the 2. Bundesliga. Nik went to see them, he spoke to SCF superfan Chris Walker (@SCF_UK), and the proof is in the middle of our broadcast. Enjoy!

Talking Fussball Extra – Juve v Bayern, Schmidt’s ban, MD23 Preview

If you’re up for some fussball talking, you’ve come to the right place. Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen discuss all the choice topics in the German game this week: Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League draw in Turin, Leverkusen Coach Roger Schmidt’s ban for persistent dissent, Mainz Sporting Director Christian Heidel’s move to FC Schalke 04 and Mitchell Weiser’s rad Karl Lagerfeld costume.

All that plus a preview of Bundesliga Match Day 23. Go listen to it right now…

Talking Fussball Extra – Gent v Wolfsburg, MD22 Preview

Just in time to mull over the Bundesliga’s lone UEFA Champions League encounter (but too early, unfortunately, to take in all those Europa League ties), Talking Fussball Extra returns for another breezy hour of football discussion.

This week Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen are joined by Kirsten Schlewitz, veteran writer and editor at a string of online outlets and now one of the founders behind the exciting estrogen-fueled venture known as Unusual Efforts. It’s a football site and publication that’s entirely run by women, it’s coming soon, and you should pay attention – it’s almost certain to turn up new ideas and perspectives. (And I suspect you’ve read enough soccer writing by dudes for two lifetimes, no?)

We take in Wolfsburg’s emphatic-then-stuttering away win, Kevin Prince Boateng’s tell-all memoir, and all the coming action on Bundesliga Match Day 22.

Talking Fussball Extra – Winterpause concludes/MD18 Preview

The first-est Talking Fussball episode of 2016 is here, and it’s pretty special indeed as Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen are joined by old chum Terry Duffelen for a freewheeling chat about as many storylines as we could fit into an hour and change.

At the top we turn over the keys to the show to you listeners, as we mull over the winter break fortunes of the clubs whose fans made the most noise in the run-up to the show. Then we move on to Match Day 18 in the Bundesliga, which features a couple of games we HAD to talk about, and a few more that each panelist had to make his case for. Finally we get all clairvoyant and make our predictions as to what will happen in the Rückrunde, including the coveted Cinderblock, Yeast, and Linchpin (not Lynchpin) awards.

Press play now.

Talking Fussball Extra – UCL group stage wrap, MD16 preview + bonus FC St. Pauli interview

The 2015-16 UEFA Champions League group stage is history – two Bundesliga sides passed the test, two didn’t. Each one has s story to tell and Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen are here to tease those stories out.

Nik then treats us to an interview with Maik Krükemeier of the Übersteiger ‘zine and the Millernton podcast, twin beacons of FC St. Pauli fandom. A great place to learn about the current state of play at Hamburg’s one-of-a-kind club.

Finally, we take a look at what’s in store on the penultimate match day before the winter break. Dig in!

Talking Fussball Extra – Champs Lg, Zorniger out at VfB, MD14 Preview

Much to discuss this week in TFE-land, where Matt Hermann welcomes Bundesliga TV commentator and columnist Kevin Hatchard back to the podcast. In the Champions League, Bayern bashed their way to another 4-0 home win, Wolfsburg inched closer to advancing, and Gladbach may yet have a say-so in when their European adventure concludes. Leverkusen…pretty much crapped the bed in Belarus.

Speaking of disappointment, Alexander Zorniger was meant to be the man to start a new era at VfB Stuttgart. But it turns out he only extended the chaos down Swabia way, flaming out after just 13 league games in charge. Und das ist gut so, writes Oliver Fritsch in Die Zeit Online. A pretty damning portrayal of German football’s misplaced trust in coaching whiz kids, and one we thought well worth a chat on the pod.

Finally there’s a whole Match Day 14 to discuss. Nordderby, Bayern-Hertha, Leverkusen-Schalke, and much much more. Listen up!

Talking Fussball Extra – Hanover aftermath and MD13 Preview

Talking Fussball Extra is back with a rather serious-minded show. Matt Hermann talks to broadcaster Jon Hartley about the scene that unfolded in Hanover as Germany’s friendly against the Netherlands was canceled because of a terror threat, and then Matt and Nik Wildhagen chat a bit about the mess the German Football Federation (DFB) has got itself into.

Then things lighten up and sound a bit more like a usual TFE episode – Match Day 13 needed previewing, so Matt and Nik got down to it. Can Dortmund end their Hanseatic misery against HSV? Is Augsburg well-poised to snap out of their funk in Stuttgart? Might Bayern drop points against Schalke? (After all, they did it twice last season…)

Tune in.

Talking Fussball Extra – Honigstein on Das Reboot + 2015/16 MD9 Preview

This week Matt Hermann sits down for an extended interview with Raphael Honigstein on his new book Das Reboot: How German Football Reinvented Itself and Conquered the World. They also talk about Jürgen Klopp’s future at Liverpool and Janet Jackson (for good measure).

Nik Wildhagen, meanwhile, went to Cologne to track down our long lost panelist Archie Rhind Tutt for a Match Day 9 preview. They also dig into the sensation that is Stefan Effenberg’s taking the reins at SC Paderborn and 1. FC Köln’s good start, which Archie has had the chance to witness up close.

Here’s a link to our Das Reboot giveaway – enter and win, y’all. Enter and win.

Talking Fussball Extra – UCL Wrap + 2015/16 MD8 Preview

The Bundesliga snatched defeat from the jaws of victory this week in the UEFA Champions League, with three out of four sides taking 1-0 leads on their big-name opposition before capitulating late to lose 2-1. (The exception was Bayern, but isn’t that always the way in the Bundesliga?)

At any rate, Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen fought like mad to keep that drop-off in quality from happening late in the pod, knowing they had an ace up their sleeve: the pod ends with our first submission in the #TFEBundesligaAnthem appeal! It’s written by Tony Williams, submitted by his dad David, and called “Ode to Fabi J: Goals for Foals.” I think you’ll agree it’s a pretty sick slow burner. Keep ’em coming!
