Talking Fussball Extra – Honigstein on Das Reboot + 2015/16 MD9 Preview

This week Matt Hermann sits down for an extended interview with Raphael Honigstein on his new book Das Reboot: How German Football Reinvented Itself and Conquered the World. They also talk about Jürgen Klopp’s future at Liverpool and Janet Jackson (for good measure).

Nik Wildhagen, meanwhile, went to Cologne to track down our long lost panelist Archie Rhind Tutt for a Match Day 9 preview. They also dig into the sensation that is Stefan Effenberg’s taking the reins at SC Paderborn and 1. FC Köln’s good start, which Archie has had the chance to witness up close.

Talking Fussball Extra – UCL Wrap + 2015/16 MD8 Preview

The Bundesliga snatched defeat from the jaws of victory this week in the UEFA Champions League, with three out of four sides taking 1-0 leads on their big-name opposition before capitulating late to lose 2-1. (The exception was Bayern, but isn’t that always the way in the Bundesliga?)

At any rate, Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen fought like mad to keep that drop-off in quality from happening late in the pod, knowing they had an ace up their sleeve: the pod ends with our first submission in the #TFEBundesligaAnthem appeal! It’s written by Tony Williams, submitted by his dad David, and called “Ode to Fabi J: Goals for Foals.” I think you’ll agree it’s a pretty sick slow burner. Keep ’em coming!

Talking Fussball Extra – 2015/16 Match Day 6 Review + Match Day 7 Preview

In honor or Nik’s new favorite punk rock earworm Heller ist Schneller, we’re also asking YOU to send us your offbeat Bundesliga-themed musical submissions, be they found or specially created just for this occasion. Hit us up on twitter under the hashtag #TFEBundesligaAnthem!

Talking Fussball Extra – Transfer history special

This week’s Extra really is a bonus – it’s a history special! In an era where deadline day can seem like the ONLY DAY THAT HAS EVER MATTERED, Matt and especially Nik decided to take an extra long view of the transfer window and look back at how German football’s Wechselbörse has changed down the years, and how the game has changed along with it.

Look out for a nifty little history intro ditty along the way too.

Talking Fussball Extra – Bayern bow out / MD33 Preview

After what happened last week at the Camp Nou, it didn’t come as a shock: FC Bayern München were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League, winning in Munich 3-2 but losing 5-3 on aggregate. Matt Hermann, Archie Rhind-Tutt and Niklas Wildhagen discuss the Bavarians’ present disappointment and future challenges, the unusual goings on at Schalke 04, the striker transfer merry-go-round, as well as peek in on the battle for promotion in the 2. Bundesliga. The 33rd match day of the 1. Bundesliga gets the TFE treatment too, complete with another edition of our Tippspiel.

Talking Fussball Extra – Bayern fall in Barcelona / MD 32 Preview

Matt Hermann and Nik Wildhagen mull over FC Bayern München’s late collapse at the Nou Camp and bring in beINSports’ Phil Schoen for a look at what makes FC Barcelona such a devastating opponent. The boys then look ahead at Bundesliga Match Day 32, including the relegation six-pointer which pits Hamburg against Freiburg and the Champions League qualifiers’ duel that is Gladbach v. Leverkusen.

Talking Fussball Extra – DFB Pokal quarter finals/Matchday 28 preview

A knock-out of an episode! Matt Hermann and Alex Handcock run down the matches from the last eight in the German Cup: Bielefeld pull a shocker! Bayern squeak past Leverkusen on penalties! Dortmund come back against the Hoff! Wolfsburg win…as we pretty much thought they would!

In part two, the boys look ahead to Bundesliga match day 28, when the two Borussias go head to head; Paderborn, Hamburg and Stuttgart look to stave off relegation against tough opponents, and Hannover 96 seek their first win since December.

Talking Fussball Extra – Matchday 22 preview & Champions League re-start

Talking Fussball Extra’s cup runneth over this week, as Matt Hermann and Terry Duffelen 1) take on FC Bayern München and FC Schalke 04’s opening legs of the UEFA Champions League knock-out stage, 2) welcome two guests to talk about the same, and 3) preview the 22nd match day of the 2014-15 Bundesliga season. Matt talks to Yan Matusevich (@YMatusik) about how Shakhtar Donetsk ended up playing its home matches 1,200 km away in Lviv, and checks in with the Spanish Football Podcast’s Phil Kitromilides (@PhilKitro) to hear about the two Madrid clubs’ dates with Bundesliga destiny. Enjoy!

Talking Fussball Extra – The Bundesliga Returns from the Winterpause

After a long winter break, Fussball is back and we are ready to talk all over it. This week Matt Hermann is joined by Archie Rhind-Tutt and guest panellist Kevin Hatchard (Talksport, TuneIn) for a bumper episode brought to you in partnership with fubo.tv, the streaming service that brings the Bundesliga right to your tablet, laptop or smartphone. Listeners with a North American IP address can sign up to win a free pass to see live Bundesliga broadcasts through to the end of the season here!

In this episode, we run down the best and worst of the winter transfer window, we preview match day 18, and we reflect on the biggest story of the break – the death of Wolfsburg’s Junior Malanda. Matt speaks to sports psychologist David Yeoman (who counselled the Hibernian FC team after the death of a player there in 2013) about the way teams can process grief.

Finally, we also have a listener survey we’d love you to take part in. Fill it out here – it’ll only take a few moments.
